CHALLENGES OF MIAMI’S YOUTH
Criminal Justice Disparities
& Community Violence
Our youth are facing insurmountable challenges, from increasing arrest rates to communities seeing a rise in homicides and gun violence. School safety concerns have many students feeling unsafe just going to and from school, on top of challenges with law-enforcement and practices that disproportionately steer black and brown students deeper into the school to prison pipeline.
Human Trafficking & Exploitation
Miami-Dade is considered a high-risk area for human trafficking in a state that reports one of the highest numbers of trafficking cases. At the same time, traffickers increasingly use social media, gaming platforms, and emerging technologies to groom and exploit youth online, placing both girls and boys at risk.
Economic Instability
& Housing
Miami Dade continues to face a shortage of affordable housing, creating instability for many working families, while children in Black and Brown communities are disproportionately impacted by poverty, and proposed funding cuts threaten critical services that support youth and families.
Mental Health & Education Challenges
Teens face growing challenges including increased risky alcohol use, rising emotional distress with more than one in three students reporting feeling sad or hopeless, overcrowded schools caused by rapid enrollment growth, and increasing cyberbullying that often goes unnoticed by adults.
The challenges faced by Miami's youth are real, but so is our approach.
Our mentorship model shows that BBBS littles are 20% more likely to enroll in College.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, we believe that the power
of a meaningful mentoring relationship can change the trajectory of a young person's life. By matching Miami's youth with caring, dedicated mentors, we work to provide the guidance, stability, and support that every child deserves.
Our programs are intentionally designed to address these barriers head-on, keeping kids connected, engaged, and on a path toward a brighter future.

Little Joshua
BIG Matt
What began in Coconut Grove, with the trust of the late Barbara Williams and the commitment of Big Brother Matt Haggman, grew into a game changer for Josh. Supported by his family and mentors, Josh excelled at Columbus High School, went on to win a national championship at the University of Alabama, earned his degree, and through perseverance went from going undrafted to becoming a Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, demonstrating what is possible when potential is met with opportunity.

BIG Calvin
Matched for three years, this duo is a powerful example of mentorship in action and are proudly nominated for Big Brothers Big Sisters "Big and Little of the Year". Calvin, a local newscaster, reflects on the experience: “Shaquille has taught me that ambition wears many faces. He has redefined my understanding of bright—it is not just academic, but emotional intelligence, resilience, and hustle.” Shaquille (Shaq) shares the impact Calvin has had on his life: “Calvin is a true role model. What I admire most about him is his knowledge, wisdom, and openness. He helps me see situations from a better perspective."

BIG Shellian
Matched for two years, this duo enjoys hitting the arcade, watching movies, spending time at the park, and getting their nails done together. Tyonna is funny, smart, and talkative, with a love for books and the outdoors. Shellian, who also serves as a BBBS program specialist, consistently goes above and beyond to nurture the potential in her Little and the youth she supports every day.

What are you majoring in, and how is your college experience going so far?
I am currently a sophomore double-majoring in Criminology and Social Work on a higher education track, with the hopes of expanding student access to justice- impacted youth. My college experience has been nothing short of amazing; I have had the opportunity to mentor younger students, serve in campus leadership roles, engage in service, and help create programs that support underrepresented students.
What has been one standout moment or favorite memory since starting college?
My favorite memory since starting college has been competing in the Miss Black and Old Gold Scholarship Pageant hosted by the Iota Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where I was honored to earn the title of Miss 1906. That experience came full circle as I now coach and mentor the next group of contestants, helping them find their confidence and purpose just as others once did for me.
How has being part of Big Brothers Big Sisters (as a Little or High School Big) influenced your journey?
Being part of Big Brothers Big Sisters helped me realize that my life did not have to be limited to the inner-city pond I grew up in and showed me that a bigger ocean of opportunities existed for me. As a Little, it gave me the confidence to dream beyond my circumstances, pursue college and a meaningful career, and help other students see the same possibilities for themselves while doing so.
Would you share a short message directly thanking FPL for funding your scholarship?
The growth I’ve experienced at FSU did not happen by chance; it was made possible through the guidance, resources, and support systems provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, which your generosity helps sustain. Your investment empowers students like me to turn passion into purpose through advising, programming, and opportunity. Not all heroes wear capes, some invest in students they may never meet, creating life-changing impact, and for that, I am deeply grateful!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami hosts Girls Night Out at Wynwood Walls
“We will have about 500 women of all ages, and we are super lucky to be allowed to be at Wynwood Walls for the third year in a row,” said Charlotte Hicks, one of the Girls Night Out co-chairs. “And the most important thing is the [youth in the program] that will be there … selling and displaying all their different projects.”
